🌞Summer Silliness; laughter as emotional release 🌞

Hello Sproutly Families,

Can we all agree that summer can be a little chaotic?

The routines are different, bedtimes get stretched, siblings spend more time together, and emotions can seem bigger than ever. In the middle of all that, there’s one powerful tool that often gets overlooked:

Laughter. It isn't just fun. It’s regulation.

When children laugh, their bodies release tension, lower stress hormones, and experience a sense of connection and safety. A silly moment can help shift a child's nervous system from overwhelm back to calm.

As marriage and family therapists, we've seen how laughter creates openings when emotions feel stuck. It won't solve every problem, but it can help families reconnect, reset, and remember they're on the same team.

Making Space for Summer Silliness

  • Don't Underestimate the Power of Play
Sometimes what looks like goofing around is actually emotional processing. Play and laughter help children work through stress in a healthy way.

  • Join the Fun
You don't have to be the family entertainer. Just being willing to laugh, be playful, or act a little silly helps children feel connected.

  • Use Humor to Reconnect
After a hard moment, a shared smile or playful interaction can help rebuild connection once everyone has calmed down.

  • Create Opportunities for Joy
Keep simple activities on hand: dance parties, water balloons, funny walks, joke books, or family games.

  • Let Yourself Laugh Too
Kids benefit from seeing adults enjoy life, make mistakes, and not take themselves too seriously.

The Silly Summer Challenge

As a family, choose one silly challenge each day this week.

Ideas include:

  • Have a backward dinner night.

  • Walk like animals to the mailbox.

  • Wear mismatched socks.

  • Tell your best joke at breakfast.

  • Have a 2-minute dance party.

  • Create a funny family handshake.

  • Talk in silly voices during cleanup.

At the end of the day, ask:

  • What made you laugh today?

  • How did your body feel when you laughed?

  • Did laughter help you feel closer to someone?

Bonus Ways to Add More Laughter

Joke Jar
Fill a jar with jokes and pull one out during meals.

Silly Story Time
Take turns adding one ridiculous sentence to a family story.

Family Talent Show
Show off funny talents, impressions, or dance moves.

Laugh & Connect Check-In
At bedtime, ask:
"What was the funniest part of your day?"

Why these work: Laughter helps release stress, builds connection, and reminds children that joy is an important part of emotional health.

Sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to create the perfect summer.

But when children look back on childhood, they rarely remember the perfect schedule. They remember the moments they laughed until their stomach hurt. They remember feeling connected, accepted, and free to be themselves.

Laughter doesn't erase hard feelings. It simply gives those feelings some room to breathe.

So this summer, don't underestimate the healing power of a little silliness. A shared laugh might be exactly what your family's hearts need.

Planting seeds of emotional confidence through joy, laughter, and connection,

Millie & Melissa
