Teach Emotional Vocabulary

Help your child label their emotions. By giving them words to describe their feelings (ā€œI’m frustrated becauseā€¦ā€), you help them communicate what’s bothering them more effectively, reducing outbursts.

Create an Anger Toolbox

Work with your child to develop a set of coping strategies they can use when they start feeling angry. This could include deep breathing, counting to 10, squeezing a stress ball, or drawing their feelings.

Set Clear Boundaries

Let your child know that while it’s okay to feel angry, it’s not okay to hurt others or themselves in the process.

Acknowledge Their Feelings

Sometimes, children just need to feel heard. When your child is angry, try validating their feelings by saying things like, ā€œI can see you’re really upset.ā€

Teach Calm Down Techniques

Simple calming exercises like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or even mindfulness can help children regain control when they feel angry. Practicing these techniques regularly when they’re calm will make it easier for them to use these skills when emotions run high.

Be Consistent with Discipline

Consistency in how you handle anger-related behaviors, like hitting or yelling, will reinforce that certain actions are unacceptable. Use calm and consistent consequences that are directly tied to the behavior.

Praise Efforts to Manage Anger

When your child successfully uses strategies to calm down or express anger in a healthy way, praise their efforts.

It’s important to remember that anger is a natural emotion, and learning to navigate it effectively takes time and practice. By providing our children with the tools to understand and express their anger in healthy ways, we’re helping them develop emotional intelligence and self-control that will benefit them throughout their lives. The key is to approach anger with patience, empathy, and consistency—guiding them through the process of managing this powerful emotion. Let’s continue to foster environments where our kids feel safe to express themselves, learn from their emotions, and grow into resilient individuals.

Warm regards,
